Mostly unpacked

Cindy and I are mostly unpacked in our new, humble abode. Google doesn't have a happy street view for our new place, or I'd give you a stock photo. We'll have to put together our own. In short ... it's a 2b2b townhouse, and it's home.

On the side I've been able to keep up the practicing, so I have a long list of practice times to post. I'll also put up commentary on those.

And it's school holidays, too. So I have this week and next to get a little r&r, relax, and finish some unfinished business around the house.

Moving, off the grid

Cindy and I moved apartments last week(-end), finishing up on Monday night about 9p. Wow ... lots of work. During that, my practice was pretty sparse. I kept up the timings, have those sitting around on my phone. I'll post a proper summary later. For the last few days, at least, things have been much more predictable.

Until Monday, at least (22nd, I think?), we're without internet or a phone. Gotta sit around at home from 8-5, waiting for the telecom van to show up.

Practice Journal, Moving

Today: 1 hr 55 min, slurs 67 bpm
Yesterday: 34 min, 66 bpm
25 Aug: 40 min, 66 bpm
24 Aug: 25 min, 66 bpm

Clearly, it was a rough week. Not at all committed ... [sigh]. Fatigue set in early today, but I plowed on through and got a lot done.

I'm planning a very short recital in October - looking forward to playing with one of my coworkers, Marta Majka. Repertoire to include some easy stuff and a bit of harder stuff:

Galliard - Sonata II (G Major)
Guilmant - Morceau Symphonique (may do this on bass ...

Hardyness, Practice

About a month ago, my hard drive gradually started dying ... losing data, misplacing things, clicking and 'thinking' real slow. I've never lost a hard drive before now. Mine still sort of works, but I don't trust it much.

Tonight I finally figured out how to get an operating system onto a replacement drive. The real trick was that I don't have a cd rom on my laptop (Evon N410c). Booting from USB is possible, though.

I've previously used Linux, and Xubuntu's Hardy Heron has been out for a little while. That's my current solution & setup.

On life, practice, and 'balance'. This week.

I've been gently reminded to post on my blog (thanks, Mom :) )

Frankly, it's been a rough week with the practice. I'm really depressed about that. Getting in enough time to keep myself at stasis, but ... if I'm not getting better, then it's likely I'm getting worse. At best, the people around me are getting better and I'm not! Against the community, I didn't make much headway this week. [sigh]

On the bright side, I did enjoy my second anniversary with my wife. We'll properly take a little weekend holiday this Friday/Saturday - I'm looking forward to that.

Practice Journal

Yesterday: 40 min (btsw), slurs 63 bpm
Today: 1 hr 46 min (btsw), slurs 63 bpm

Today included a bit of practice on trumpet (!). About 15 min btsw. Gotta learn enough on that to be a competent teacher and all. Articulation, airstream, and embouchure are seriously different for trumpet ... obviously.

Bousquet: improving, still. Easy & clean at 56 bpm. Manageable at 60 bpm. Challenging to get it perfect at 63 - breathing is the biggest obstacle. This will improve with more practice, though. I was having the same problem before I got it up to 56 bpm.

Upgrade - Wordpress 2.6

So ... installed the new Wordpress. Good break from practicing - another 20 min to go.

Consider dropping me a note if the blog looks funny. I'd rather it didn't look funny.

Back to practicing.

Update - v0.73b

Big-ish update yesterday and today. I've moved dentonlt.com to Dreamhost. I am also gradually moving and updating content over the next couple months.

I spent yesterday trying to get the blog style to match the rest of the site. Right now it's 85% set for Firefox, and a little less for IE (sigh). I'm too scared to try out Opera ... poor little muso isn't a programmer! It will come. In the mean time, pardon the wonky alignments and content sizing.

Lots of practice progress to record, but I'll keep it simple.

Networking change - Localhost / WAN details

A little networking error has been deterring me from posting ... this post is a useful solution from the wordpress forum (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/135935).

I run wordpress from a laptop at home. This works relatively well, though I have to tweak my settings every time my ADSL modem gets a new IP address. I can handle that.

The problem: my server is behind the ADSL modem. I set the Wordpress server details to the modem, which is fine for everybody to access ...

Statcounter

I've re-enabled the snippet of code linking to statcounter. Not to be nosy, but ... I haven't heard much from who is reading. I hope you're not just a bunch of spam bots! Leave a comment if you're inclined.

Thanks for reading ;)
