Greasing the Tuning Slides

After cleaning and drying the bell, everything has to go back together. First put the bell back onto the valve section, then pull out some tuning slide grease.

Tuning slide grease is about the consistency of lip balm, and usually comes in a small container. Bach still sells grease in a squeeze bottle, but I had a bad experience where one cracked open when I squeezed it! What a waste, and a big mess. I currently use Superslick.

When using grease, cream, and oil, I support the 'less is more' theory. I use only one finger at a time, and I use as little as possible.

A dry slide will lack shine. Only use enough grease to give an ultra-thin and shiny coating. If you need more, you can always add more. If you use too much, it makes sense to wipe it all off and start over. Use a tissue.

Of course, avoid touching things with your greasy finger. Slide grease is thick, sticky, will stain, and should never be eaten!

Many companies make slide grease. Grease is about the consistency of lip balm. A dry slide has no shine. A greased slide is shiny, but not lumpy.
