Cloths and Snakes
Different trombones come with different finishes. Some are more red, others more yellow, some are plated in nickel silver.
When setting up for final cleaning/polishing, it is important to use the right cloth for the job. Never use a brass polishing cloth on a silver instrument, or vice-versa. Some cloths are chemically treated, or specially textured ... or just collect oxide from particular metals. If used on the wrong kind of finish, these cloths can remove the finish and permanently damage the instrument.
Seeing as the cosmetic appearance of a brass instrument significantly affects its value, it is very important to avoid making this mistake! Inside of the instrument is just as important.
Cleaning snakes are like little chimney sweeps. They are used for removing deposits from the inside of tubes. Most snakes are pretty straightforward - just a long metal spring with a plastic brush at the end. You may be able to find one that is completely coated in plastic - I strongly prefer these, as it protects the inside of the instrument from damage.
Finally, never use a cleaning snake on the outer slide. The slide is polished to a mirror finish inside. This helps keep the slide smooth and fast. Unfortunately, using a snake inside the outer slide can permanently damage this mirror finish. Only use the snake inside the inner slide or other parts of the instrument. Also avoid the bell section, as this can scratch the finish.
