Tools & Freedom
Charlie Savage has an interesting post regarding how different programming languages can "get in the way" when it comes to creating computer software. Stability and flexibility can come at the expense of each other. Size and security are equally important matters.
Certainly there is a generic statement to be repeated: "use the right tool for the job." Don't nail nails with a sledge hammer. Don't play trombone with every muscle in your body. Same thing.
Much of my current training - the breathing, the Caruso exercises, the flexibility, air attacks - all this is working to help me get out of my way. It helps to return to maximum simplicity, just pick up the horn and exhale into it. Make the playing just like that.
Just a few more decades, and I'll have it!

Glad that you find this
Glad that you find this useful, Erin :) I like keeping a practice journal to look back on, and it's nice to hear that someone else finds use in these things.
It's almost strange how many of these things we learn end up being life patterns - seems like it would make for a good book! I should search around to see if that one has been written ...
