Emerson on the Power of Practice

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF version

Franklin Covey puts out a quote-of-the week email. They recycle their quotes and I am starting to notice when they come back. I don't mind re-reading Emerson, though:

"That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do. Not that the nature of the thing itself has changed but our power to do it is increased."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hearing this for a second time (third? fourth?) makes me think more about it. Some of us say that "practice makes it easier", while others say "practice makes it easier for me." In retrospect, who is being honest?

Practice lets us change, grow, expand. The thing we do doesn't change - we change.

Go practice. Go increase your power to do your art.
