Music Merchants

I often direct students and colleagues to a few music merchants (retailers) that I use. These are some of the places that I frequent, but that doesn't mean they are the only places to go. Visit places you've never heard of, ask other players and teachers for their experience, and make your own decisions and discoveries.

Some other advice:

  • When you find good service somewhere, stick with it.
  • Shop by phone. If you need something immediately, call to be sure it's in stock. Otherwise, call for prices and delivery times.
  • Mention your teacher or school when you shop.
  • Compare prices, and quote prices from other shops. Don't lie, but be open.
  • Check on return and warranty conditions.
  • Don't believe everything you hear in the store (sorry, it's true!). Do lots of research before you get to the store. Ask as many teachers and players as you are able.

Craft and Linen Suppliers

Cheesecloth (wide-weave muslin), is a very inexpensive cotton material. It is useful cleaning the inside of brass instruments. In particular, the outer trombone slide deserves regular cleaning - I clean my slide roughly every day. You can pick up some cheesecloth from the average linen supply store. I have found muslin at the stores below. Shop by phone, starting with the place closest to where you live.
