As our family and friends pack up to visit, we're beginning to post our little gems of travel advice. We'll continue making additions in the days ahead, but this will help you get started.
Ballarat Food & Drink
What does one do between the ceremony and reception? Well ... eat, of course. Ballarat food generally rivals that of Melbourne, but the hard local water will damage your hot drink of choice. Cindy thinks L'espresso is still the best coffee in town. Denton recommends a San Pellegrino instead of tea - you'll find more bags than fresh leaf. Here are some of Cindy's favourite spots.

L'espresso is a small, tight squeeze inside, but it's worth the trouble for the sourdough toast. Cindy's favourite bread outweighs the coffee and tea, which suffer from the hard local water. If you fit inside, they also have an eclectic wall of CDs to browse.

Not far down the road from L'espresso is a younger, more spacious establishment. Their $15 lunch special includes a choice of main course plus a glass of wine - enough to satiate that Texan appetite.
Ballarat's French Kitchen
7/1340 Sturt St
Ballarat, 3350

This little cafe is an ideal, well-lit stop for an afternoon coffee and cake. Custom foccacias and other treats for a reasonable price. You might also talk to Pauline about her specialty cakes.
Europa Cafe
Ballarat, 3350

We visited Europa Cafe last weekend (22 July 2006) as an alternative to L'espresso. Cindy was crushed when she realized she accidentally ordered their cappuccino (Coffex brand). The pide sandwich was quite good, however. A good lunch if you're not a coffee connoisseur.
The Olive Grove
Ballarat, 3350

Another one of the local favorites, the Olive Grove is just down the road from Ballarat & Clarendon College ... I think. Although the tables make walking around a bit difficult, this cafe has an excellent selection of food and drink. Take a look in the glass case on the way in - definitely something for everyone.
Assunta's Restaurant Cafe
Ballarat, 3350

Frankly, I didn't find Assunta's as good as expected. If you're one of the women guests, you will likely frown that the toilets are relatively open-to-the-weather ... especially in the August cold! Despite all, the menu selection is quite good, and the family-style variety is affordable.
Phoenix Restaurant & Brewery

Our new favorite dinner location has an impressive wine list and excellent daily specials. The tapas are excellent, but don't plan to eat on a budget. Enough tapas for two, wine/beer, coffee, leaf tea: ~$85 AUD. Pricey, but we do look forward to doing it again. Maybe we'll do the $15 lunch (main w/ wine or coffee).
Getting around Ballarat
Information for our overseas guests. Please let us know if you require assistance with transport. Many of Cindy’s family and friends will be travelling to Ballarat (from Melbourne) for the wedding.
Public transport is limited in Ballarat. There is a bus service, but the buses run infrequently on weekends. A taxi ride from the Wedding chapel to the reception will only take ten minutes, and should be relatively inexpensive. Alternatively, you might like to rent a car with several friends, and do some sightseeing during the weekend.

Alternative accommodation
There are plenty of accommodation choices in Ballarat, and we’ve listed some helpful websites. We also recommend a B&B option – a set of three cottages that can accommodate 2-8 people. The option to share one of these cottages with family members and/or friends, may help to keep costs down.

We love Bilrene cottage, we’ve already stayed there twice! (24 July 2006: make that five times...)
